Indonesia is the world’s third largest democracy by population, after India and the US.

Decades of authoritarian rule gave way to constitutional democracy in 1999 and, since then, world leaders have used the country as a model of inter-religious harmony.

Yet despite enshrining religious freedom in the constitution, the Indonesian government continues to arrest and prosecute pro-independence proponents in Papua and the southern Moluccas Islands for non-violent actions such as flag-raising and attending peaceful rallies, in breach of UN declarations.

Yet despite enshrining religious freedom in the constitution, the Indonesian government continues to arrest and prosecute pro-independence proponents in Papua and the southern Moluccas Islands for non-violent actions such as flag-raising and attending peaceful rallies, in breach of UN declarations.

Whilst human rights abuses by Koppassus (Indonesian Special Forces) in the Papua region receive international attention, incidences on Ambon Island, in south Moluccas, often fly under the radar.

In Ambon today, the spectre of inter-religious conflict and sectarian violence from 1999 to 2005 still lingers in the air.

The Moluccan Sovereignty Front (Front Kedaulatan Maluku, FKM), established in 2000 during the conflict, is a banned Christian separatist group advocating self-determination for the Moluccas Islands, and recognition of the Republic of South Moluccas (RSM). http://www.michr.net/index.html

According to the Moluccas International Campaign for Human Rights (MICHR), in 2007 nine FKM members were sentenced to between seven and 20 years imprisonment, after being beaten and tortured during interrogation and detention, for treason. Their crime was embarrassing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono by unfurling the banned "Benang Raja" (rainbow) flag of the RSM and performing a Maluka war dance in front of him at an official ceremony in Ambon.

Andreas Harsono from Human Rights Watch (HRW) told 3rd Degree at least 68 political prisoners from the Moluccas Islands were currently still behind bars in seven prisons on Java, Nusa Kambangan and Ambon islands. http://www.hrw.org/

Exiled FKM founder Alex Manuputty, speaking to 3rd Degree from his Californian hideout, said he is seeking a political asylum on the run from Koppassus.

“I cannot go home [to Ambon] for I shall be arrested or even killed,” Mr Manuputty claimed.

“But I am not afraid of Koppassus. Even when I stood against them, when I still lived in my beloved country, the RMS, I was not afraid.”

Mr Manuputty applied for asylum in the US in 2007, after issuing a petition to the United Nations for the return of sovereignty and the release of political prisoners in Maluku and West Papua.

Mr Manuputty said: “We believe in RMS' proclamation on April 25, 1950. We need sovereignty handed back to the right people, the south Moluccas, who face much suffering.”

Asked what he would say to the Indonesian President if he had the chance, Manuputty said he sent the President letters all the time.

“I always send him letters, in a polite manner, to remind him to hand back RMS' sovereignty, for it is not his. I ask him to sit at the peace table and discuss how we can settle this endless dispute,” he said.

Mr Manuputty said he missed his Ambon home.

“I do miss our fatherland, but just for a while, for we shall soon enjoy it for everlasting days.”

Ambon resident Herry Manullang told 3rd Degree the situation today in Ambon was relatively peaceful, but the struggle for independence had to continue.

“There is peace, but still unrest. The struggle must go on, despite the intimidation,” he said.

Like Mr Manuputty, Mr Manullang denied that Koppassus scared him.

“I am not afraid of anyone,” he laughed.

Mr Manullang said as Christians, Moluccas were persecuted by the Muslim-centric Indonesian government.

He wanted people around the world to speak out against the continued imprisonment of FKM/RMS supporters.

According to HRW, Indonesian authorities should immediately release activists for Moluccan independence.

Meanwhile, the Australian government will spend an estimated $646.8 million on Indonesia in 2013/14http://www.ausaid.gov.au/MediaReleases/Pages/Australian-Humanitarian-Assistance-for-Maluku.aspx

Mr Manuputty mengatakan ia merindukan rumah Ambon nya.
